A.D.Rattray Glentauchers 11

After 5 years, Glentauchers 2011 butt #425 was split between a sherry hogshead (DRCC58, March 2019) and this 1st fill bourbon barrel. An unusual double maturation with an abundance of sweet, fruit flavours – perhaps the surprise highlight of this release. Distilled at Glentauchers and matured in a Sherry Butt for 5 years / 1st Fill Bourbon Barrel for 6 years. Date Distilled: 07.06.2011/Date Bottled: 13.01.2023, Number of Bottles: 319, un-chill filtered and natural colour.

Appearance: White wine. A beaded tide mark forms after agitation. Many medium trails form within the viscous film. After a while the beading morphs into many teardrops.

Nose: A nice ethanol wave emerges from the glass first, accompanied by orchard fruits dusted with icing sugar and Chantilly cream.
Baking spices, sugar-dusted pastry and some raspberry/strawberry sweetness emerge after a while too.

Palate: A pleasing viscous mouthfeel with plenty of warning tingling white pepper spice and mild chilli. The icing sugar, orchard fruit and red berries all appear fairly briskly, adding a nice balance against the spice notes.
The strawberry jam becomes the dominant flavour pretty quickly and it’s glorious, bursting with sweet vibrant fruit and sugar. Orange jelly and mint chocolate make an appearance next.

Finish: Long. The spices, jam and jelly all linger for ages. A very faint drying touches the palate in the dying stages, but it’s very mild. A little wheat biscuit emerges too.

Overall: The nose is very pleasant but the palate and finish are fantastic. This is a real banger of a dram. I love jammy whisky and this one had that quality in spades!
