Exclusive to Summerton Whisky Club. A 6-year-old bourbon, sourced from Midwest Grain Products (MGP) distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. This whiskey is from independent bottlers Americana, with a Mashbill: 75% Corn | 21% Rye | 4% Malted Barley. Bottlings are always non-chill filtered and natural colour.
Appearance: Quite light on colour: straw or lager. A decent beaded swirl mark with many thin to medium trails forming. After a while, the beads turn to large teardrops. The viscosity of the film on the glass is quite impressive.
Nose: Yep, that’s bourbon. Plenty of honey, vanilla and (salted) caramel, with a black pepper and cinnamon layer on top.
Some flat cherry coke notes emerge next.
Palate: This one has a lovely mouthfeel and a great balance between sweet honey and vanilla notes, and the more spicy rye notes of the black pepper and cinnamon.
The cherry Coke flavour is consistent from the nose and appears before too long.
The vanilla element mellows and becomes more of a creamy custard now.
Finish: Medium in length. The black pepper and cinnamon-dusted custard notes linger, along with a lovely rye warmth. A touch of cherry fright at the end.
Overall: It’s really nice, I’m very pleasantly surprised. Great mouthfeel, balance and spectrum of flavours.
