anCnoc 125th anniversary Peat 46% ABV

This limited-edition whisky has been released to mark the 125th anniversary of Knockdhu Distillery and the spirit of the founder, John Morrison. Matured in ex-bourbon American oak and then further matured in Spanish oak casks. Without any additional colouring or chill-filtration, with an outturn of 500 bottles.

Appearance: Very light gold/white wine. Many thin to medium trails circle the glass underneath a thin beaded swirl line. A semi-viscous film clings to the glass.

Nose: Quite a heady ethanol kick considering the ABV. Lots of ashy smoke, vanilla, faint soured milk and a little lemon sherbet. A touch of salted red berries emerges soon after the initial aromas.

Palate: Quite a viscous mouthfeel at first, which seems to thin with each sip. Some white pepper and chilli tingle. Some citrus bitterness and the smoke element. Drive vanilla, honey and brown sugar come through after a time too. The spice soon mellows into black pepper, cinnamon and nutmeg.

Finish: Short to medium. The smoke, spices and citrus linger a little while. There’s a slight astringency in the finish that I’m not fond of, but it’s mild.

Overall: Fairly pleasant. Everything works apart from that astringency. I wouldn’t buy a bottle but I’d think about it!
