Appearance: A lovely rich dark amber, like the last minutes of a sunset. A decent beaded swirl mark with plenty of medium trails quickly forming. A thick viscous film clings to the inside of the glass.
Nose: Quite light on the alcohol side, more friendly & easy going. An instant wave of sherried oak, baking spices & red fruit-filled pastry. More sugary notes appear next, quite confectionary, like a pick n mix. There’s a element of tropical fruits too, adding a lighter & ‘fresh’ layer to the nose.
Palate: A welcoming oily mouthfeel. Largely sweet with jammy red berries, with a black pepper spice kicker on the first sip. There’s also a buttery side, adding some mellowness. White pepper-dusted red berries appear next, along with oak, cinnamon and a touch of chilli tingle. berries, with a black pepper spice kicker on the first sip. Finish: Those jammy berries, pepper heat and chilli linger for a decent length of time. It’s a real chest warmer. The backing spices fade fairly quickly.
Overall: It’s a friendly well-balanced mix of oak, rich sweetness and spice. An easy sipper that’s well worth a purchase.
