Ardnamurchan Rum Cask 50% ABV

From Ardnamurchan distillery, this 2023 release is a limited run of just 7200 bottles. Matured in 28 bourbon barrels, that were re-racked in Jamaican rum casks for 2 and a half years, which were then married with 3 other bourbon barrels. Bottled at 55% abv, free from chill filtration.

Appearance: Light gold/white dessert wine. A few droplets and a thin film form quickly, and a thin tide mark circles the inside of the glass.

Nose: A good hit of ethanol from that 50%. Quite vegetal and brown sugar-forward. Oak and a little damp cellar funk now, it smells quite ‘raw’ if that makes sense!?
Cucumber, a little honey, and garden mint arrive next.
A little green grape appears after a while, too.

Palate: Quite a pleasant, semi-oily mouthfeel. The brown sugar and mint sauce came first, closely followed by salted caramel and black pepper.
I can taste the rub influence, and, although I’m not usually fond of rum cask releases, I like how it’s worked with this.
A touch of cloying, some toffee and banana and subtle cherry in syrup next.
The black pepper element steadily increases to a mild chilli tingle all around the mouth.

Finish: Medium in length. The chilli, brown sugar, and salted caramel all last a decent amount of time. A sweet later also lingers, adding balance.

Overall: I really like this one. I’d choose the sherry cask or cask strength first, but this is the only room cask I’ve really enjoyed other than Ardbeg Drum.
