Blind Dram 3 – Glenfarclas 10yo Master of Malt Exclusive 55% ABV

Initially tasted blind as part of the ‘BlindDrams BTC40’ Twitter tasting. A bespoke bottling from the Speyside-based distillery, released exclusively for Master of Malt. Matured for ten years in oloroso sherry casks, it’s bottled up at a robust 55% ABV.

Appearance: Light caramel. A thin beaded tide mark forms after a while. Slowly, a few thin to medium trails form around the glass. A semi-viscous film clings to the glass.

Nose: A nice level of ethanol. Woody and funky with Black Forest Gateau (syrupy cherries, cream and chocolate). Blackberries, plum and oak. Icing sugar and steeped dried fruits now. The fruity notes increase as the dram matures. Chantilly cream emerges after a time, adding a mellow layer. Christmas spices too.

Palate: A little thin on arrival, with soapy floral notes. Some black pepper, ginger and mild chilli tingle. Some dark chocolate, black cherry and possibly black coffee…..quite sour, raw and drying.

Finish: Long. The dark chocolate and pepper notes linger for a decent length of time. The floral element fades quickly.

Overall: It’s decent enough but not my cup of tea. The sour notes don’t agree with my palate.
