Blind Dram 5 – Craigellachie 10yo Signatory CS Collection 68.4% ABV

Craigellachie 2012

Initially tasted blind as part of the ‘BlindDrams BTC40’ Twitter tasting. Aged in a single first-fill oloroso sherry cask for a decade. Bottled at cask strength

Appearance: Deep reddish amber. A thin beaded tide mark and plenty of tiny beads. Upon further agitation, many teardrops form along with a fairly thick film and trails.

Nose: Rich and deep with a nice level of ABV. Plenty of oak and chocolate caramel, as well as being a little smokey and meaty. Jaffa Cakes emerge after a while. Celery with salt now, that’s a new one. Some funk wraps around the other elements.

Palate: Huge flavour and decent mouthfeel. Plenty of cherry, oak and vanilla. There’s a big wave of chocolate too, both texture and flavour. Spices offer balance to the sweet notes in the form of black pepper, nutmeg, ginger and cinnamon.

Finish: Medium to long. These big flavours all make it to the finish and last for a decent length of time. The oak and black pepper linger the longest.

Overall: I really enjoyed this one and think a bottle would develop well. Great unapologetic flavours and I liked the individual elements too.
