Bulleit Frontier Whiskey 45.6% ABV

Bulleit frontier

This 10-year-old whiskey was previously bottled at 40% ABV for the UK market but is now available at 45% ABV. The mash bill in this edition is made up of 68% corn, 28% rye and 4% malted barley. This whiskey won a Gold medal at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2012.

Appearance: Copper in colour. A fairly viscous film with many medium trails. Numerous beads form quickly from the fairly thick tide mark. After a while a few small teardrops form from the beading.

Nose: The ethanol is obvious but not intrusive where the aromas are concerned. Plenty of oak and spice, followed by a sweeter balance of brown sugar, honey and vanilla. Some pepperiness and cinnamon emerge next with an orange biscuit wheat aroma in the background.

Palate: The ABV is more obvious on the palate. A fairly thin mouthfeel with black pepper, aniseed, cinnamon and ginger up front. Honey, vanilla and oak follow, along with furniture polish, a little mint and bitter orange.

Finish: Medium to long. The spices and honey last a decent length of time. There’s a digestive biscuit note that sits under the other flavours.

Overall: I prefer this to the 40% version as it has more bite and the flavours are less diluted. It’s a decent drop for the money.
