Our Hazelburn range takes its name from one of Campbeltown’s lost distilleries and was first produced at Springbank Distillery in 1997. Making full use of all three stills, this range is triple distilled and unpeated resulting in a spirit that is creamy, delicate and light.
Springbank Distillers
Appearance
Very light in colour, white wine like, and the swirl line beads up immediately at this point, and it costs the glass. #thewhiskeychaps
Nose
Quite white fruit sweet with a foresty feel atm, there’s an oiliness too, and the nose has changed quite a bit since pouring. #thewhiskeychaps
There is an ashiness as @whiskeychap suggested, and even though it’s non peated I am getting a medicinal thing, not expected. Gooseberries and green grapes, tree bark too. #thewhiskeychaps
Palate
Decent mouthfeel, and it’s a spicy boy alright, lots of 1st fill bourbon spices, spicy vanilla and cinnamon, apricots, orange zest, chocolate orange, yes the ash too. #thewhiskeychaps
I added a few drops of water into mine, and it’s more fruity, red berries coming through, some drying too, and liquorice. There’s a pastry feel also, and a sweetness that comes with them. #thewhiskeychaps
Finish
Long side of medium in length for me, still very spicy, grapefruit and pomelo now, salted caramel syrup in black coffee. #thewhiskeychaps
My thoughts
This was the first of three Hazelburn handfills we were tasting. I enjoyed this dram, but after tasting all three it became obvious that this was my least favourite of the three. In hindsight after tasting the others this one does come across as a little 2 dimensional sadly. Don’t get me wrong it has flavours that are enjoyable, but i think it lacks some depth and roundedness. Oh well, you can’t win them all.
