Kavalan Solist Port Cask 57.8% ABV

Taiwanese single malt whiskey from the Solist line, produced by King Car Distillery. Taiwan’s subtropical environment allows Kavalan Solist Port Cask to properly mature in Portuguese Port barriques. 194 bottles were filled at cask strength (57.8% vol.) from cask #0111118006A.

Appearance: Properly dark. Cola with a red tinge. A thin beaded tide mark forms and soon starts to morph into as many teardrops. The viscous film starts to crease into a corrugated layer around the inside of the glass after a time. Eventually, some medium to thick trails emerge.

Nose: Cherries, honey, apples and stewed first fruits. Possibly due to the colour sending subliminal messages but I’m also getting cold syrup. The ABV is at a nice level, subtle but noticeable. Some hints of damp leaf litter and bark emerge later on too. As the dram matures a prominent flavour of blackberry jam grows, it’s lovely.

Palate: A lovely oily mouthfeel and an immediate wave of sweet raspberry and cherry syrup, pastry, black pepper and cream. A wisp of smoke in the background. Some oak drying accompanies the sweeter elements. Baking spices and toffee apples emerge next.

Finish: Long. The pepper, spices, cherry syrup and creamy notes last for a decent length of time.

Overall: For a long time my favourite whisky was Kavalan Sherry Oak and this one almost lived up to it. It’s really pleasant with plenty going on, well-balanced flavours and a good level of ABV. I love the syrup sweetness, blackberry jam and creamy notes especially.
