Kilchoman 2008 Vintage 2015 46% ABV

The first 7-year-old whisky from this Islay-based distillery, the Kilchoman 2008 Vintage was released as an addition to their Vintage collection. Bottled in August 2015, this single-malt Scotch whisky was distilled in July 2008 and then aged in American bourbon barrels.

Appearance: Old gold/light apple juice. A thin beaded swirl line forms above a semi-viscous film. The beads soon become small teardrops and a few sporadic thin to medium trails form.

Nose: Not a huge amount of ethanol. A sweet meaty and spicy smoke hits first. Sweet paprika, lemon pepper and black pepper. The citrus element extends past the spice and becomes a note in its open right.
Honey, pineapple and grapefruit appear after a second sip. Some subtle orchard fruits in the form of green apple and pear.

Palate: Quite a thin mouthfeel. Black pepper, honey, vanilla and that sweet spiced smoke from the nose. The lemon note is also consistent.
Some bitterness and a little astringency lurk but, thankfully, don’t amount to much.
The honey sweetness builds as the dram matures and lends more balance to the spices.

Finish: Short to medium. The spices, now gentle, honey and vanilla all last a fair amount of time. The smoke is ever-present too.

Overall: It’s a decent dream but not to my tastes, I prefer more berry sweetness. The smoke element is lovely though and that growing sweetness is pleasing.
