Kilkerran 8yo CS – Sherry Cask Matured 2024 57.4%

kilkerran cs sherry 24

The 2024 100% Oloroso sherry cask matured edition of Kilkerran single malt. Kilkerran is the sister and heavily peated sister distillery to Springbank. It was reopened in 2004 by J & A Mitchell and currently only distils roughly 3-4 months out of the year. This lightly-peated single malt was matured for eight years in ex-sherry casks and bottled at cask strength.

Appearance: Deep amber/ale. A beaded tide mark with sporadic teardrops clings to the glass.
Many thick trails form among the viscous film. After a while the film becomes corrugated.

Nose: The ABV isn’t well balanced, especially given the strength. Soft beach fire smoke, sea air and a vegetal note emerge first.
Petrichor, plasticine and sweeter berry elements follow, along with freshly drilled wood and a spice note I can’t put my finger on.

Palate: A semi-viscous mouthfeel and a good spicy hit of ethanol, reflecting the ABV more accurately than the nose.
Mild BBQ meats, that heated wood note, sweet berries, caramel, and toffee-covered cherries.
There’s a subtle hint of cloying at the back of the tongue and a very faint Sulphur note.
There are some blood orange and wheat biscuits towards the finish too. Unfortunately there’s a weird putty-like element that sits alongside everything else and is quite off-putting.

Finish: Long. The wheat and orange, together with the toffee cherry and light ashy smoke all linger a decent length of time.

Overall: I like it but feel that I want it to improve throughout the bottle for it to live up to its predecessors. That putty element is not good.
