Kilkerran 8yo Cask Strength 56.9% ABV

kilkerran 8yo

The 2021 edition of Kilkerran’s 8 YO Cask Strength. Aged in Oloroso sherry casks.

Appearance: Mahogany, very deep and rich for its age! Looks very inviting!
Coats the glass with an oozy film, slowly forming medium legs.

Nose: Bursting with dark fruits, butterscotch, cherries, chocolate, slight mintiness and some oaky notes.
The ABV is spot on for this and doesn’t interfere with the lovely aroma, but is very evident.

Not getting any smoke?

Palate: Lovely delivery, the mouthfeel is beautifully oily for an 8yo, chocolaty and with a nice warmth in the chest without any burn. Some eucalyptus and a touch of copper.

There’s also a slight hint of sulphur, rather than smoke, which isn’t really showing itself for me, but this is balanced out by an agglomeration of wonderfully sweet and moorish fruit and nut bar’esque flavours: Dark fruits, milk chocolate, syrupy cherries and hazelnuts are all in the mix here. What a wonderful whisky indeed.

Finish: A little spicy, with white pepper and cherries. Medium in length.

Overall: This whisky is spot on for me. Dark, rich and full of deep sweet flavours and importantly, the right flavours. It’s impressive how much depth and complexity this has for an 8yo!

If you can find a bottle for a reasonable price, get it, you will not be disappointed.
