Kilkerran Bourbon Cask 8yo 2023 55.8% ABV

For the first time since 2018, the fine folks at Glengyle Distillery have released a bourbon cask matured version of Kilkerran 8-year-old cask strength as part of their limited annual release. This edition is highly anticipated and rightly so; it has been bottled at cask strength with no added colour or chill filtration.

Appearance: A thick tide mark with plenty of thick trails seeping to the surface. A thick film clings to the glass but quickly thins as it sinks.
After some time a few droplets form around the glass.

Nose: A well-balanced level of ABV, on paper it seems high but it’s not overwhelming. Distant BBQ smoke, sea breeze and caramelised steak. Some vanilla, hot stone, stewed fruit sweetness and some coffee ripple ice cream.
Dusty books and gooseberry too.

Palate: A good spice-forward first sip. The ABV is far more evident on the palate. There’s a virus element asking with ashy smoke, like the dying embers of a BBQ.
A vegetal grass-like element appears as the dram matures.

Finish: The ash, salt, vegetal note and spice all linger for a good amount of time.

Overall: It’s what most have come to expect from Kilkerran, a great dram with plenty going on and a multi-layered array of flavours and aromas.
