Svensk Ek, or ‘Swedish Oak’, is matured in barrels made from ancient Swedish Oak trees planted on the island of Visingsö. centuries ago, oak originally intended for shipbuilding.
Svensk Ek is, in fact, a re-launch of the previous product Mackmyra Första Utgåvan (The First Edition), although the composition of the whisky has also been slightly adjusted.
Nose: OK, so the bottle, freshly opened, ht me with stewed apples and sugar! Wonderful! Once poured I get dried fruits, spice and oak – Christmassy!
Pepper and light bitterness. It’s definitely a lot fruitier and richer in my opinion than the Gront Te. A totally different flavour experience
Fuller bodied, sweet caramel with that oak and dark fruits. Good stuff!
Palate: Nice buttery mouth feel, malt biscuits and raspberry jam – JAMMY DOGERS!
As I finish the sample, I can pick up oak, leather and tobacco again in the glass.
Taking a shallow inhale on the edge of the glass, I get that jam again (maybe the new make berries?), really lovely and sweet, almost tarte.
Finish: Short sweet and slightly oaky finish. Dark fruits linger the longest.
Overall: A great Autumn sipper this one. Fruits and wood!
