Miltonduff 10 y/o First Fill Oloroso Sherry Quarter Cask from The Whisky Cellar 57.1% Distilled 28/08/12 and bottled in July 2023.Limited to just 351 bottles.
Appearance: Malt vinegar brown. A thin beaded ride mark forms asking with a few random droplets and teardrops. After a while infrequent thin trails also form within the semi-viscous film.
Nose: Lots of lovely deep rich stewed orchard fruits, brown sugar dusted pastry, vanilla and baking spices. Following this, upon further nosing are notes of confectionary sugar, milk chocolate and subtle oak. It’s a really friendly and decadent nose, lovely and sweet, rich and autumnal.
Palate: A pleasing mouthfeel. Some chili and white pepper tingle, sulphur, salinity and those jammy stewed fruits. The oak and a subtle wispy sweet smoke are also more evident on the palate, compared to the nose. A slight drying at the back of the throat also starts after a short while. Strawberry jam, salted caramel, sweet pastry and black pepper build as the dram matures, becoming quite syrup-like and sharp.
Finish: The jam, pastry and pepper notes last for a decent amount of time. The sulphur drying dies off quite quickly too, which is a bonus.
Overall: It’s a lovely jammy dram with plenty going on and good balance. I really like the sweet dessert-like elements. I’d like less of that Sulphur note without the need of a drop of water though.
