1870 Original Batch echoes George Garvin Brown’s original batching process. Back then, Brown batched barrels obtained from three distilleries to create a consistent flavor profile. To emulate that process today, we also select barrels from three warehouses, each barrel originating from a different day of production, with a different entry proof and a different age profile. The three expressions of Old Forester are then batched together and minimally filtered to craft Old Forester 1870 Original Batch.
Old Forester
Appearance
I’d say this is a little brighter than mid gold in colour, it has a lovely thick swirl line and slow medium thick legs. #TheWhiskeyChaps
Nose
Now, I’m getting that hot mashed potato thing here, with some menthol initially. There is something similar to wood polish, and it’s coming across like faint sulphur. Vanilla and evergreen trees. #TheWhiskeyChaps
I really like it myself, as I do love just mashed potatoes 🥰 #TheWhiskeyChaps

Palate
Nice mouthfeel, nice and spicy with cinnamon and vanilla. The evergreen thing comes across on the palate too, and it is has plenty of black treacle, cigar leaves, espresso, and a sweeter note, perhaps royal icing? #TheWhiskeyChaps
Finish
Medium long for me, and generally very much like the rest of the palate, with the inclusion of a rum and raisin flavour. #TheWhiskeyChaps
The Finish is drying with a slightly bitter spiciness and pine wrapped in orange peel #thewhiskeychaps

My thoughts
This was the first of the 4 we tasted during this session, and when we were tasting it i thought it was more of an entry level Bourbon experience. That said considering the price of whisky/whiskey/bourbon at the moment £56 isn’t too bad at all. After taste the 4 bottlings in this Old Forester range this was my least favourite, not because it’s a bad bourbon, it isn’t, the other 3 just offered a more complete experience for me. As to whether i’d buy a bottle, i probably wouldn’t, i’d most likely buy a bottle of the 1897.
