One of the 4 Lux Row whiskies sampled during the Tweettasting, hosted by The Whisky Wire.
Introduced in April 2019, Rebel Yell 100 is a wheated bourbon and a new bottle extension for the Rebel Yell brand.
Rebel Yell 100 was launched in conjunction with a rebranding of the entire Rebel Yell family. Lux Row Distillers states that the new bottle features an embossed rounded shoulder in addition to revised front and back labels.
Comprised of a mash bill of wheat, corn and malted barley. Matured for at least 4 years in new charred American white oak barrels. This is the latest offering from the Rebel Bourbon range.
Bottled at 100 proof/50% ABV, compared to their standard Kentucky Straight Bourbon, which is bottled at 40% ABV.
Appearance: Shiny yellow gold, good viscosity, oozes down the glass after a swirl.
Nose: Lovely intense vanilla and honey, a good tingle on the nose from the ABV too! Brown sugar, cherry, caramel popcorn and pear drops. Porridge with brown sugar on top. Varnished wood shavings.
The nose is almost salty, not coastal, like salted caramel.
Palate: Nice oily delivery, spicy! Black pepper and medium chillies, definitely taste that dialled up ABV! Minty honey, quite herbal too: grass and a slightly bitter after taste. Plenty of the wood influence evident on the palate. Think that’s where the bitter tannin taste is coming from
Finish: Woody and spicy finish. Slightly bitter still, with honey and vanilla notes underneath. The ABV keeps the heat up in both the taste and on the chest!
Overall: A spicy meatball of a bourbon! Definitely dialled up from the standard offering. Get past the spiciness and ABV, and you’ll be rewarded with a number of lovely aromas and flavours. Not bad at all.
